Cuba has cancelled its traditional May Day parade due to acute fuel shortages, the first time the event has been cancelled for economic reasons since the 1959 revolution. Long queues have formed at petrol stations in recent weeks, with drivers often waiting for days. President Miguel Diaz-Canel has said Cuba is only receiving two-thirds of the fuel it needs, adding that suppliers are failing to fulfil contractual obligations. Although Cuba has access to low-grade crude, it lacks the facilities to process it. Deliveries of higher quality crude from Venezuela, Cuba’s largest provider of fuel, have dropped by 50% in recent years.
